Product Overview

API 641 and ISO 15848 compliant Resolute Ball™ valve design

Reliable Flow Control for Pulp, Mining, and Petrochemical Applications

Resolute Ball™ is a truly unique product designed to solve various customer challenges related to fouling on the upstream ball surface, common in infrequently operated applications. When certain media in pulp and paper, mining, petrochemical, and refining industries remain dormant over time, thick scale accumulates on the ball surface. The seat must scrape scale off a conventional ball, significantly increasing torque and making the valve difficult to operate, often leading to premature valve failure such as seat leakage, stem shear, and operational sticking. The unique Resolute Ball™ design provides an off-the-shelf solution to this common problem. Standard ball valves feature a spherical surface that maintains contact between the ball and seat throughout the full 90-degree operation. When the valve operates, scale accumulated on a conventional ball’s spherical surface passes through the seat sealing area, causing increased torque, scoring of sealing surfaces, and potential operational failure. Bray Resolute Ball™‘s carefully engineered unique geometry has successfully helped our customers overcome these challenges. When the Resolute Ball™ rotates, contact between the ball and seat is minimized after 10 degrees of rotation, significantly reducing media contact with the seat throughout the quarter-turn operation. The Resolute Ball™ geometry allows accumulated media particles to wash past the ball and seat, reducing wear by up to 70%. This unique design provides customers with optimized operation, longer service life, lower valve operating torque, higher reliability, and lower total cost of ownership. Resolute Ball™ is available as a direct replacement for several standard product lines, including one-piece flanged ball valves RF15/RF30 and two-piece flanged ball valves F15/F30. Each of these high-performance product lines is field-proven with extensive global installed bases across various industries. For more information, refer to the individual product line brochures.

FAQ

How does the Resolute Ball™ reduce the impact of fouling media on ball valve torque and sealing surfaces?

The Resolute Ball™ features a specialized ball geometry. In conventional ball valves, the ball and seat maintain continuous contact throughout the full 90° opening/closing process, causing scale on the ball surface to pass through the seat sealing area, increasing torque and scoring sealing surfaces. The Resolute Ball™ minimizes ball-to-seat contact after 10° of rotation, allowing accumulated media particles to pass more easily between the ball and seat, reducing wear, operating torque, and sticking risk.

What applications are suitable for the Resolute Ball™, especially for scaling or infrequent operation?

This design is suitable for applications where media tends to accumulate scale or particles on the ball surface during static periods, including mining and mineral processing, pulp and paper, black liquor, green liquor, white liquor, petrochemical, refining, PVC chloride, and polymer/monomer applications. The Resolute Ball™ offers targeted value for infrequently operated valves that experience high torque or sticking during opening and closing.

What practical advantages does the Resolute Ball™ offer compared to a conventional ball?

Scale on a conventional ball passes through the seat sealing area during operation, potentially causing seat leakage, stem shear, and operational sticking. The Resolute Ball™ reduces ball-to-seat contact during rotation, allowing accumulated media particles to pass between the ball and seat, reducing wear by up to 70%. Benefits include lower valve operating torque, more reliable operation, longer service life, and lower total cost of ownership.

Which Bray ball valve series can the Resolute Ball™ replace, and what sizes are available?

The Resolute Ball™ serves as a direct engineered replacement for Bray one-piece flanged ball valve RF15/RF30 series and two-piece flanged ball valve F15/F30 series. F15/F30 series is available in sizes 1/2" to 12" (DN 15 to DN 300); RF15/RF30 series is available in sizes 1" to 12" (DN 25 to DN 300). Specific configuration should be confirmed based on actual valve model and application conditions.

What key factors should be considered when selecting the Resolute Ball™ for high-fouling applications?

Key considerations include whether the media forms scale or deposits during static periods, valve operating frequency, and whether existing valves experience increased operating torque, seat wear, leakage, or sticking. The Resolute Ball™ is designed to reduce the impact of fouling media on the seat sealing area during operation and is compatible with the F15/F30 and RF15/RF30 series. Specific configuration should be confirmed based on actual model and application conditions.
