Suitable for compact systems with a shared condensate return main or a vertical lift downstream of the trap.

Capsule Options and Operation

Standard capsule (STD): discharges condensate at 12°C below saturated steam temperature.

NTS capsule: discharges condensate at 6°C below saturated steam temperature.

SUB capsule: discharges condensate at 24°C below saturated steam temperature.

Check valve: an integral check valve is available for all BPM21L sizes. With the check valve fitted, the model designation becomes BPM21LCV.

Safety Information, Installation and Maintenance

For full details, see the BPM21L Carbon Steel Balanced Pressure Thermostatic Steam Trap Installation and Maintenance Instructions.

Installation Guidance

The trap is designed for horizontal installation with the cover uppermost, but it may also be installed vertically. A drop leg upstream of the trap is recommended. The capsule does not need to be removed when welding the trap into the pipeline. Fit suitable isolation valves upstream and downstream of the trap to simplify maintenance and replacement.

FAQ

Which steam systems and equipment is BPM21L suitable for?

BPM21L is suitable for steam equipment with limited installation space, such as individual OEM machinery, hospital sterilizers, and independent steam tracing drain lines without lift requirements. Its compact design, carbon steel body, and integral stainless steel strainer help achieve condensate drainage in confined spaces.

How to choose between BPM21L and BPM21LCV?

Both are compact balanced pressure thermostatic steam traps with integral stainless steel strainers. BPM21L without check valve is suitable for conventional individual drain applications; BPM21LCV with integral check valve reduces the risk of condensate backflow during equipment shutdown or negative pressure conditions, suitable for applications with shared recovery headers or vertical lift pipes after the trap.

How do different capsules affect condensate discharge temperature of BPM21L?

The capsule determines the discharge temperature relative to steam saturation temperature. STD standard capsule discharges at 12°C below saturation; NTS capsule at 6°C below saturation; SUB capsule at 24°C below saturation. Selection should consider the equipment's allowable condensate accumulation, tracing requirements, and actual operating conditions.

What are the connection options, working pressure and temperature range for BPM21L?

BPM21L is available in 3/8\" and 1/2\" threaded connections, BSP or NPT; 1/2\" also available in socket weld. Body design rating PN25, maximum working pressure 21 bar g at 217°C, maximum working temperature 242°C at 20 bar g, minimum working temperature 0°C. Always check the operating range diagram against actual conditions to avoid areas that may damage internal parts.

What are the installation and maintenance requirements for BPM21L, and does welding require capsule removal?

This trap is recommended for horizontal installation with the cap facing upward, or vertical installation; a drop leg before the trap is recommended. For ease of maintenance and replacement, install shut-off valves before and after the trap. For electric welding connections to piping, capsule removal is not required. Replaceable spare parts include capsule and seat assemblies, gasket sets, and strainer elements. When ordering spares, specify trap model, size, and capsule configuration.
