Application scenarios
Low-Point Drainage in Air and Gas Distribution Systems
Used to discharge condensate from low-point collection or drain locations in air and gas transmission lines. Select DN15-DN25, 1", or DN40/DN50 according to the load and pipe size.
Selection points
Valve Cone Material and Operating Temperature
The CA44 uses a soft Viton fluoroelastomer valve cone and has a maximum operating temperature of 200°C. The CA44S uses a stainless steel valve cone and has a maximum operating temperature of 400°C. Select the model according to the valve cone design and operating temperature.
Integral Flanges for In-Line Maintenance
This series features an integral flange design and supports in-line maintenance. Maintenance requirements can therefore be considered when selecting a trap for air and gas systems.
Carbon Steel Body and Stainless Steel Internals
The CA44 and CA44S have carbon steel bodies and stainless steel internals and are suitable for condensate drainage from air and gas systems.
Balance Line Connections by Size
Small-bore models have a 1/2" BSP balance line connection, with a 1/2" NPT connection available for ASME versions. DN40 and DN50 models have a 3/4" BSP or NPT balance line connection.
Optional Drain Valve Connection for Small-Bore Models
For small-bore models, the bottom of the cover can be supplied with a 1/2" BSP or NPT tapped hole for fitting a drain valve.
Installation & maintenance notes
Horizontal Installation
The CA44 and CA44S must be installed horizontally.
Balance Line Connection Requirements
Connect the balance line using the connection provided in the cover. DN15-DN25 models have a 1/2" BSP connection or an NPT connection specified at the time of order. The 1" and DN40/DN50 models have a 3/4" BSP or NPT connection.
Do Not Insulate Large-Bore CA44S Models
CA44S models with 1" threaded or socket-weld connections, and those with DN40 or DN50 flanged connections, must not be insulated.
FAQ
How do CA44/CA44S ball float traps operate in air and gas systems?
The trap uses a float that rises and falls with the liquid level to operate the valve cone automatically. When liquid accumulates to a specified level, the float rises and opens the valve cone to discharge the collected liquid. The valve closes when the liquid level falls. One advantage is that it operates without a bleed hole, but a separate balance line must be connected to prevent air or gas locking.
What is the difference between the CA44 and CA44S, and what sizes are available?
The CA44 has a soft Viton fluoroelastomer valve cone and a TMO of 200°C. The CA44S has a stainless steel valve cone and a TMO of 400°C. Both models have carbon steel bodies. Small-bore flanged versions cover DN15-DN25 (TI-P148-02: DN15/20 for the CA44 and DN15/20/25 for the CA44S). The CA44S is also available with 1" threaded or socket-weld connections (TI-P148-23) and DN40/DN50 flanged connections (TI-P148-03). Maximum differential pressure variants are CA44S-4.5/10/14/21/32.
What sizes and connection types are available for the CA44/CA44S?
Small-bore versions: DN15-DN25 flanged connections (EN 1092 PN40, ASME 150/300, JIS/KS 20). Large-bore CA44S versions: 1" threaded connections (BSP/NPT) or 1" socket-weld connections (BS3799 Class 3000); DN40/DN50 flanged connections (EN 1092-1 PN40, ASME 150/300, JIS/KS 20K). A balance line connection is provided in the cover.
What precautions should be taken during installation?
Install the trap horizontally and below the drain point, ensuring that the float arm can move freely in the vertical plane. Connect the balance line upstream of the trap. For ease of maintenance, install a union in the balance line close to the cover and fit isolation valves upstream and downstream. A check valve is recommended where outlet backpressure is present, and a silencer is recommended when discharging directly to atmosphere. CA44S models with 1", DN40, or DN50 connections must not be insulated.
Are test reports or certificates available, and how should spare parts be ordered?
The product complies with the European Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC. Typical test reports and EN 10204 3.1 material certificates are available. Spare parts include the soft valve cone for the CA44 only, the main valve assembly with float, and the gasket set. Specify the model and size when ordering. Refer to IM-P148-37 for maintenance instructions.
