Spirax Sarco KBV21i/KBV40i (commonly referred to as KBV21/KBV40 in China) are key-operated carbon steel flanged ball valves for boiler bottom blowdown systems. KBV21i is suitable for PN40 conventional industrial boilers, while KBV40i is suitable for ASME Class 300 high-pressure systems. Both feature carbon/graphite-reinforced PTFE seats and an AISI 316 ball, with a maximum operating condition of 17.25 barg at 208°C. They are equipped with a safety interlock that allows the operating key to be removed only when the valve is closed. Internal spare parts are interchangeable for the same nominal size.

Application scenarios

Manual boiler blowdown for non-timed systems

For boiler blowdown lines that do not require timed automatic blowdown. Operators manually open and close the valve with a key to perform boiler blowdown within the specified operating range of KBV21i/KBV40i.

Manual blowdown and upstream isolation for high-pressure boilers

KBV40i is suitable for high-pressure boiler systems in thermal power plants, paper mills, chemical plants, and similar facilities. It can serve as a manual isolation valve or emergency backup valve upstream of pneumatic blowdown valves such as ABV40i. KBV21i is suitable for conventional PN40 industrial boilers.

Key-interlocked manual boiler blowdown operating point

For manual boiler blowdown operating locations. The operating key cannot be removed when the valve is open and can be removed only after the valve is closed, supporting boiler-house safety requirements.

FAQ

What is the relationship between KBV21, KBV21i, KBV40, and KBV40i?

There are essentially two valve versions: the standard-pressure version and the high-pressure version. KBV21 and KBV21i are different designations for the same product, with i being the official international model designation. The same applies to KBV40 and KBV40i. KBV21i is suitable for PN40 conventional industrial boilers, while KBV40i is suitable for ASME Class 300 high-pressure systems.

What are the main differences between KBV21i and KBV40i?

Both are key-operated blowdown ball valves with the same safety mechanism. However, KBV40i has a heavier body and flanges for high-pressure flanged piping. The cold hydraulic test pressure is 60 barg for KBV21i and 76.5 barg for KBV40i. For larger nominal sizes, an extended T-handle operating key is generally recommended for KBV40i.

How does the operating key safety mechanism work?

There is no permanently fixed handle on top of the valve. A standard key or extended T-handle key must be inserted to operate the valve. The operating key can be removed from the socket only when the valve is fully closed. When the valve is open for blowdown, the key is mechanically locked in place to prevent incorrect operation that could leave the blowdown valve continuously open.

What nominal sizes and connection options are available for KBV21i/KBV40i?

Available nominal sizes are DN25, DN32, DN40, DN50, and DN65. KBV21i is available with BS4504 PN40 or BS1560 Class 300 flanges; DN32 is available only in PN40. KBV40i is primarily suitable for ASME Class 300 high-pressure flanged connections.

Are spare parts interchangeable between KBV21i and KBV40i?

For the same nominal size, the internal spare parts kits for KBV21i and KBV40i are interchangeable. They include the stainless steel ball, carbon/graphite-reinforced PTFE seats, stem seals, and gasket assemblies. When ordering, specify the model, nominal size, and application.
