Note: To achieve the rated capacity, the total lift or back pressure BP on the automatic pump trap, comprising the static head plus the pressure in the condensate line, must be lower than the motive steam pressure. BP (back pressure) = (H x 0.0981) + (P) + (Pf)

Where: height (H) in m x 0.0981 + pressure in the condensate line (P) in bar g + downstream pipe friction loss (Pf) in bar. (The pipe friction loss Pf may be disregarded if the downstream pipeline is less than 100 m long, the condensate line does not run full, and the effect of flash steam at the maximum operating load of the heat exchanger has been considered when sizing the pipeline.)

3. Installation

Important - Safety Notice

Before carrying out any installation or maintenance work, ensure that all steam and condensate lines are isolated.

Ensure that all residual pressure within the product or connected pipework has been fully relieved and that all hot components have cooled to prevent burns. Wear suitable protective clothing before carrying out any installation or maintenance work. Use appropriate lifting equipment and ensure that the product is securely supported.

Note: If the pumped medium presents an explosion hazard, the motive gas must be inert and non-oxidizing.

3.1 Inlet Pipework

To prevent the equipment from flooding, the inlet pipework should be sized to accommodate the volume of condensate generated while the pump is in its discharge cycle. A pipe length and diameter providing a condensate storage volume of 2.1 L will normally be sufficient. It is recommended that the condensate reservoir pipe be positioned at least one pipe diameter below the process outlet while remaining as high as possible above the APT10-4.5 inlet. Install a Spirax Sarco Y-type strainer with 0.8 mm perforations at the APT10-4.5 condensate inlet, as shown in Figure 5.

The recommended installation head from the pump base is at least 0.3 m (12 in). The minimum installation head is 0.2 m (8 in), but capacity will be reduced. Note: Hydraulic pulsation may occur at the inlet check valve during cold startup. In this case, installing a throttling valve is recommended to reduce the filling pressure.

3.3 Connections (Refer to Installation Drawing, Figure 4)

The APT10-4.5 has four connections. The DN20 (3/4”) connection marked (IN) connects to the equipment drain outlet, and the DN20 (3/4”) connection marked (OUT) connects to the condensate return line. Flow arrows indicate the correct flow direction. The DN15 (1/2”) connection marked (S) connects to a properly drained motive steam line. To ensure that this line remains free of condensate, install a Spirax Sarco steam trap and a 100-mesh strainer (see Figure 5). The DN15 (1/2”) connection marked (E) connects through a balance line to the equipment condensate outlet. The balance line should be connected as close as possible to the equipment condensate outlet and to the top of the condensate line, as shown in Figure 5. Note: When securing the APT10-4.5 to a horizontal surface, two 12 mm diameter holes may be drilled through the bottom of the pump cover.

3.4 Outlet Pipework

Correct outlet pipe sizing is essential to prevent excessive back pressure on the APT10-4.5. The flash steam volume generated when the heat exchanger operates at full load must be considered during sizing.

4. Commissioning

  1. After installing the inlet and outlet pipework and the motive steam/exhaust connections as shown in Figures 4 and 5, slowly open the motive steam inlet valve to supply steam to the APT10-4.5. Ensure that the exhaust/balance line is open and unrestricted.
  2. Slowly open the isolating valves on the condensate inlet and discharge lines to allow condensate to enter the APT10-4.5 pump body.
  3. The APT10-4.5 is now ready for operation.
  4. While the process equipment is operating, the APT10-4.5 will discharge condensate into the return line under all pressure conditions.
  5. If any abnormal condition is observed, recheck the installation against the recommendations. If the unit still fails to operate, refer to the troubleshooting guide in Section 9.

5. Operation

Step 1 (Figure 6)

The APT10-4.5 automatic pump trap operates on the positive displacement principle. Condensate enters the pump body through the swing check valve, causing the float to rise. The float is connected to the steam trap mechanism by a multi-link pivot shaft. When the upstream system pressure PS is sufficient to overcome the backpressure PB (Figure 6), the accumulated condensate is discharged through the open steam trap mechanism.

Under these conditions, the float modulates automatically according to the condensate flow entering the APT10-4.5, controlling the opening and closing of the steam trap.

The illustration shows the larger APT14.

APT operation Step 1, showing condensate discharge when the system pressure exceeds the backpressure

Figure 6

Step 2 (Figure 7)

On some temperature-controlled equipment, the system pressure PS may fall below the backpressure PB (Figure 7). Under these conditions, a conventional steam trap cannot discharge condensate, causing the equipment to become waterlogged.

APT operation Step 2, showing that condensate cannot be discharged when the system pressure is below the backpressure

Figure 7

Step 3 (Figure 8)

With the APT10-4.5, however, condensate fills the pump body and raises the float until the changeover linkage is actuated, opening the motive steam inlet valve and closing the exhaust valve.

APT operation Step 3, showing condensate filling the pump body and actuating the changeover linkage

Figure 8

Step 4 (Figure 9)

The snap-action mechanism rapidly changes operation from steam trap mode to powered pump mode. As the motive steam inlet valve opens, the pressure inside the APT10-4.5 rises above the backpressure, forcing condensate through the steam trap seat and into the recovery system.

APT operation Step 4, showing the motive steam inlet opening to discharge condensate

Motive steam inlet

Figure 9

Step 5 (Figure 10)

As the condensate level in the pump body falls, the float actuates the changeover linkage again, closing the motive steam inlet valve and opening the exhaust valve.

APT operation Step 5, showing the descending float actuating the changeover linkage and closing the steam inlet

Figure 10

Step 6 (Figure 11)

Opening the exhaust valve equalizes the pressure inside the APT10-4.5 with the condensate inlet pressure, allowing condensate to re-enter through the inlet swing check valve. At the same time, the outlet ball check valve closes to prevent condensate from flowing back into the pump body, and the trapping and pumping cycle begins again.

FAQ

How does the APT10-4.5 discharge condensate when the equipment pressure is lower than the condensate return backpressure?

The APT10-4.5 operates as a positive displacement unit combining automatic trapping with a steam-powered pump. When the equipment pressure is higher than the return backpressure, the unit discharges in trapping mode. When the equipment pressure falls below the backpressure and accumulated condensate raises the float to the changeover point, the mechanism opens the motive steam inlet and closes the vent valve. This raises the pump body pressure above the backpressure and delivers the condensate into the return line. After the liquid level falls, the unit automatically resumes venting and filling for the next cycle.

What are the pressure, temperature, and connection requirements for the APT10-4.5?

This model has a PN10 body design rating. The maximum motive steam pressure and maximum operating pressure are both 4.5 bar g, and the maximum operating backpressure is 4.0 bar g. The operating temperature range is -10°C to 155°C, and the ambient temperature limits are -10°C to 200°C. The condensate inlet and outlet connections are DN20 (3/4 inch), while the motive steam and vent/equalizing connections are DN15 (1/2 inch). BSP or NPT threaded connections are available.

Which system parameters should be checked when selecting the APT10-4.5?

Selection requires verification of the available installation head, available motive steam pressure, total backpressure in the condensate return line, heat exchanger operating pressure at full load, maximum steam load, minimum inlet temperature of the heated medium, and maximum controlled temperature. Total backpressure consists of static head, pressure in the condensate line, and downstream piping friction loss. It must be lower than the motive steam pressure to meet the pumping requirements.

How should the discharge capacity data for the APT10-4.5 be interpreted?

This model has a pumped volume of 2.1 L per cycle. At an installation head of 1.0 m and a motive steam pressure of 4.5 bar g, the maximum capacity in trapping mode is 830 kg/h. At a backpressure of 2.5 bar g, the maximum capacity in pumping mode is 650 kg/h. Actual capacity is affected by the installation head, motive steam pressure, return system backpressure, and changes in operating conditions, and should be calculated using the system parameters.

What are the key piping requirements when installing the APT10-4.5?

The installation head is measured from the pump base. A minimum of 0.3 m is recommended, with an absolute minimum of 0.2 m. A lower installation head reduces capacity. The condensate inlet must be connected to the DN20 connection marked IN, and the outlet must be connected to the DN20 connection marked OUT. Motive steam must be connected to the S connection, and the vent/equalizing line must be connected to the E connection. A Y-type strainer with a 0.8 mm aperture must be installed at the inlet. The motive steam line must be kept properly drained and fitted with a steam trap and a 100-mesh strainer. Outlet pipe sizing must also account for flash steam generated when the heat exchanger is operating at full load to prevent excessive backpressure.
