1. Safety information

Safe operation can only be guaranteed when the product is correctly installed, commissioned, used and maintained by qualified personnel in accordance with these instructions. General installation and safety requirements for pipework and plant construction must also be followed, and tools and safety equipment must be used correctly.

1.1 Intended use

Refer to these Installation and Maintenance Instructions, the product markings and the technical documentation to confirm that the product is suitable for the intended use.

These products comply with the requirements of the European Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU and carry the CE mark where required. Their Pressure Equipment Directive classification is as follows:

  1. The products are designed specifically for steam, air or water/condensate in Group 2 media. For use with other fluids, contact Spirax Sarco to confirm suitability.
  2. Check material compatibility, pressure and temperature, including their maximum and minimum values. If the product operating limits are lower than the system limits, or if product failure could result in hazardous overpressure or overtemperature, the system must be fitted with safety devices.
  3. Determine the correct installation position and fluid flow direction.
  4. The products are not designed to withstand external stresses imposed by the pipework system. The installer must assess these stresses and take appropriate measures.
  5. Before using the products with steam or other high-temperature media, remove all connection protection caps and the protective film from the nameplate.
  6. BTM7 Food+ and BTS7.1 are intended for process systems capable of meeting the requirements of EC1935. Before initial use in food-contact applications, the end user must perform an appropriate CIP (clean-in-place) cycle to reduce the risk of unintentionally added substances in the system. The list of materials that may come into direct or indirect contact with food is provided in the relevant product Declaration of Conformity.

1.2 Access, lighting and surroundings

Before starting work, ensure safe access. Where necessary, provide a suitably protected working platform and appropriate lifting equipment. Ensure adequate lighting, particularly in areas where detailed or complex work is being carried out.

Identify any media that may be present, or may previously have been present, in the pipework, and consider flammable materials, hazardous substances and extreme temperatures. Assess the risks of explosion, oxygen-deficient environments such as tanks or pits, hazardous gases, hot surfaces, fire risks from welding, excessive noise and moving machinery around the product.

1.3 System, pressure and temperature

Assess the effect of the proposed work on the entire system. Operations such as closing isolation valves or switching off the power supply must not place other parts of the system or personnel at risk. Hazards may include isolating exhaust outlets or protective devices and disabling control or alarm functions. Isolation valves should be opened and closed slowly to prevent system shock.

All pressure must be isolated and safely vented to atmospheric pressure. Consider double isolation, consisting of two isolation valves with venting between them, and lock or tag closed valves. Even when a pressure gauge indicates zero, do not assume that the system has been fully depressurized. After isolation, wait for the temperature to return to a safe level to prevent burns.

If FKM components have been exposed to temperatures above 250 °C (482 °F), the material may decompose and form fluorine compounds, fluorocarbons and fluoro-olefins. FKM may burn above 500 °C (932 °F), and its combustion residues are highly corrosive and acidic. Wear acid-resistant gloves when handling the material. Calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide may be used for neutralization.

1.4 Tools, protective equipment and work permits

Before starting work, prepare suitable tools and consumables, and use only genuine Spirax Sarco spare parts. Based on the risks from chemicals, high or low temperatures, radiation, noise, falling objects, and eye or face hazards, determine the protective equipment required by personnel carrying out the work and by people nearby.

All work must be performed or supervised by suitably competent personnel. Installation and operating personnel must be trained in the correct use of the product in accordance with these instructions. Where a formal work permit system is in place, it must be followed. Where necessary, appoint a person responsible for safety and display warning signs.

1.5 Handling, residual hazards and frost protection

Manual handling of large or heavy products may cause injury, particularly back injuries. Assess the risks associated with the task, personnel, load and working environment, and select an appropriate handling method.

During normal operation, the product outer surface may become hot. Under maximum permitted operating conditions, the surface temperature of some products may exceed 300 °C (572 °F). Many products cannot drain themselves completely, so take particular care when dismantling or removing them. Products that cannot drain themselves completely and may be exposed to sub-zero conditions must be protected against freezing.

1.6 Disposal and returning products

Unless otherwise stated, the product is recyclable. With appropriate precautions, it is not expected to present an ecological hazard. FKM may be landfilled or incinerated in accordance with national and local regulations. It is insoluble in water but soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons. Before disposal, check local recycling and waste regulations, and refer to the Spirax Sarco product compliance page for the latest information on substances of concern.

When returning a product, customers and distributors must provide written information about any health, safety or environmental risks that may arise from contamination residues or mechanical damage, together with the required precautions. Where hazardous or potentially hazardous substances are involved, the relevant health and safety data sheets must also be provided.

2.1 Product description

BTM7 cleanable (serviceable), BTS7 and BTS7.1 fully sealed, non-serviceable steam traps are thermostatic steam traps designed to remove condensate from chemical-free clean steam systems while minimizing condensate accumulation. The maximum operating pressure is 7 bar g.

All of these steam traps are manufactured from 316L stainless steel, have minimal crevices and feature a self-draining design. The internal surface roughness of BTS7.1 is 0.5 μm Ra and the external surface roughness is 0.75 μm Ra. The typical surface roughness of BTM7 and BTS7 is 1.6-3.2 μm Ra.

The standard BTM7 configuration uses FKM O-rings that comply with FDA CFR Title 21 Part 177 Section 2600 and USP Class VI requirements. BTM7 Food+ and BTS7.1 are designed, manufactured and approved for steam and condensate applications in accordance with the EC1935:2004 regulation on materials intended to come into contact with food and EC2023:2006 good manufacturing practice for materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

BTS7.1 is designed to self-drain when installed vertically with downward discharge. A 3/4” gasket should be fitted to the inlet of 1/2” to 3/4” traps.

3. Installation

Before carrying out any installation operation, read Section 1, “Safety information”, and confirm that the product is suitable for the installation conditions with reference to this document, the product markings and the technical data.

  1. Check the materials, pressure and temperature, including their maximum values. If the product’s maximum operating limits are lower than the system limits, a safety device must be installed in the system to prevent overpressure.
  2. Determine the correct installation position and fluid flow direction.
  3. Before using the product with steam or other high-temperature media, remove all connection protection caps and any applicable protective film from the nameplate.
  4. The trap is designed for vertical pipework with downward flow to allow self-drainage. Check the flow-direction arrow on the body during installation. Tube-end connection fittings, clamps and gaskets are not supplied with the product.
  5. Do not expose the thermostatic element to superheated steam conditions, as this may cause excessive expansion of the element. A suitable cooling section should be provided during installation to prevent condensate from backing up into the process equipment under normal operating conditions.
  6. If the trap must undergo a hydraulic test at the full design pressure, it is recommended that the internal components of the applicable product be removed before testing to reduce the risk of damage.

Note: Do not overtighten the clamp, as the seal may expand or be extruded and interfere with the element frame. Normally, only remove any looseness and then tighten the nut by no more than half a turn.

Note: Sufficient allowance for thermal expansion must be provided to prevent excessive stress on the pipework and trap.

Handle the body and components carefully to avoid surface damage. If the trap discharges to atmosphere, the discharge must be routed to a safe location because the discharge fluid temperature may reach 100 °C (212 °F).

4. Commissioning

After installation or maintenance, confirm that the system is fully functional and test all alarms and protective devices. As with all steam systems, system pressure must be built up slowly to prevent damage to sensitive equipment.

5. Operation

The product operates using a stainless steel capsule filled with WFI sensing fluid. Under cold-start conditions, the capsule is fully open, allowing large quantities of air, condensate and/or CIP fluid to be discharged. As the system temperature approaches steam temperature, the fluid in the capsule expands and closes the valve, shutting the trap to prevent the loss of live steam. The closing action occurs very close to steam temperature, ensuring efficient drainage of the system.

6. Maintenance

BTS7 and BTS7.1 are fully sealed, non-serviceable units. The following internal component replacement procedure applies only to BTM7.

Before carrying out maintenance, read Section 1, “Safety information”. First isolate the trap from the supply and return lines, safely release the internal pressure to atmospheric pressure, and allow the trap to cool. During reassembly, ensure that all mating surfaces are clean and always use the correct tools, safety procedures and protective equipment.

6.1 Replacing BTM7 Internal Components

  1. Remove the nuts and bolts (5).
  2. Remove the end connection with the internal valve seat (4), O-ring (3) and element assembly (2) for cleaning or replacement. During reassembly, ensure that the element assembly (2) is correctly positioned; see Figure 9.
  3. Reassemble using a new O-ring (3), with the valve head positioned to close the valve-seat orifice.
  4. Refit the nuts and bolts (5), tighten to the recommended torque, and return the trap to service.
  5. Slowly open the isolation valve until normal operating conditions are reached.
  6. Check for leaks.
